Simple Safety Tips In Computer Repair A Starting Guide

By Kate Randall

Computer repair and upgrades are not everyone's idea of fun. However, for the technically inclined it could be fun if a few simple precautions are followed before attempting repairs or upgrades. People who are comfortable with electronics may find a simple upgrade or accumulated dust easy to do.

If a machine is your favourite, or necessary for work, you may want to stop right here and take it to a shop. If you are not a trained tech, then things can go wrong and your computer might not survive it. If a device is under warranty, breaking the seal in the back can void the warranty as well.

Opening up a PC or laptop and poking about is not always the best troubleshooting method it's best to know what you are checking. If you choose to open up the case on a device turn the device off first and turn off any backup power supply. Wait several minutes because devices can hold a dangerous charge even after the power is off.

Choose a well lit area to remove the cover of the machine. Make sure the power supply is off and unplugged. Place the screws in a cup nearby or other container so when you put the machine back together, you can find the parts.

Take off any metal jewelry before attempting to check anything inside the device. Wear an antistatic wrist guard because static discharge can completely ruin a machine. Check belt drives and connections if troubleshooting a device, often loose connections are the root of the issue. Dust on the inside of a PC or laptop is harmful to the machine. Use a can of compressed air to blow it out of the machine.

It usually takes only a few minutes to upgrade ram or add a PCI card. If you are replacing parts; save the old ones in case the upgrade is not satisfactory. Computer repair can be fun for some people if simple safety measures are followed.
