Machines are bound to break at one point or another and having them fixed can become quite expensive. An alternative to taking it to a shop is performing the computer repair at home. In order to properly access a machine, following a few steps will help make the process go much smoother.
In preparation for opening the side, the cables will need to be removed and placed aside. For ease of reinstalling the connections, take some tape and mark the wires during the disconnection process. The connections will consist of a monitor cable, keyboard and mouse cables, and a power cable.
After disconnecting the connections, finding a place to work on the system is next. The ideal place for performing the job is somewhere free of clutter and high enough so there is no bending over the machine. Upon finding the place to work, gather up the tools that will be needed.
The most important tool to have is an anti static strap, which can be purchased from local electronics stores or online. The strap is worn around the wrist and helps protect sensitive components from static electricity. If for some reason a component is zapped, it will most likely be permanently damaged.
Screws are generally used to hold the panel on a case, so a screw driver will be required. Lay the machine down with the right side facing up and proceed to the next step of removing the side. In some designs the cases side panel is secured by lever systems, in cases such as these pulling or raising the lever will release the lock.
When the cover is removed, the part or parts that are no longer working can be removed and replaced. Upon replacing the parts, replace the cover and reinsert the screws or make sure the lever latches properly. Reconnect all the cables and power on the system to make sure it starts up and loads the operating system correctly.
