I Did Not Backup Files - Can I Still Recover?

By Kel Shoeman

Recovering files with no backup files isn't simple-but it's possible. Before I go any further, allow me advise that you just backup your personal computer now whilst it's still operating.

Recovering data without backup data files means you're going to waste hours-or many hundreds of dollars-attempting to scrape every remaining bit of every last file off of your old disk drive. It won't be simple and you may end up with nothing to show for your effort, but if you lost an important file or files, you probably need to make the effort.

Follow these three techniques to generate post-failure backup files:

Create An Partial Backup File

Luckily for us, many hard disc drives only fail partially and they still have some working parts that we can use. This allows us to recover some darter from those working parts by using a special tool.

I take advantage of a tool known as ddrescue. It runs from the Windows command line, so there is no impressive graphical wizard that will walk you through recovering your disk drive. (I told you this would not be straightforward.)

Even though this tool does not look pretty whatsoever, it is extremely powerful. Ddrescue will examine your disk drive and grab as much data as it possibly can and as fast as it can, skipping the problems on the drive. It will create a backup files of anything that it finds and after that it will go back and try harder to get the files from your broken parts. Sometimes you get lucky and get all your files back.

Cool Out Backup Data files

A good number of hard disc drives break down because the ball bearings wear down so much that the hard disk can't spin around like usual. You possibly can temporarily fix some of these metal ball bearings by shrinking them.

It is very easy to shrink metals once they are a lot cooler but you need to be careful when you do this. You need to set zip lock bags around your hard drive firmly and leave it in the freezer overnight. In the morning you should now quickly install your hard drive and try to access the files again while they're hard disk drive is still chilled. If this does not work you, then there is one more thing that you could do.

Get Your Backup Files From A Pro

Why not let the professionals recover the data for you as it is probably a lot safer than putting your hard drive in a freezer. The expert's have the right environment and also specialised tools available to them to recover any files that you might have lost.

I have to warn you though, this service is not cheap and will cost you anywhere from $400 and upwards to $2000 and more.

The good news is that most of these services which offer backup data files offer free evaluations-you simply have to mail them your disk drive. (Just make certain that they are a reputable company, or they may not mail back your drive if you do not buy from them.)

Conclusion

We all know that the conclusion here is to avoid these situations and always backup your files. Obviously all of this work above sounds like a big fat hassle and we would all love to not be involved with it.
