Syncing Your Durable Laptop Data

By Allyson Westcot

There are a variety of methods to keep your data in sync among multiple computers, both paid and free. Some are instant, and some need a little bit of forethought and work on your side. Decide which is best for you personally, and you can always have the most updated files in easy reach.

You might set up a net-based email account and email the new version of a document to the email that's accessible from anywhere. It isn't difficult to download when you are at another PC to save over the old data. You may use a free, internet-based e-mail so that you can access it from anywhere simply.

You might also copy the files from your system to a USB drive so you'll always have the updated document. The risks here are losing the drive or having it fail. A syncing service may be best for people who travel often and work on the road with rugged laptops.

How you choose to sync files will have lots to do with whether you'll need to pay for a service. Google Docs and other identical services are free, and let you access your files from anywhere. There are also free and paid options if you want documents to sync between devices either at regular times or on-the-fly.

A cloud service that keeps a copy of your files on its server and syncs them between devices may be ideal. Many allow you to use the service free if you limit the size of your total files to 1 or 2 megabytes, or they may have a 30-day or 60-day free trial so you can get an understanding of the interface. Paid services may offer more features, allow larger storage limits or have different methods of input that might be easier for you. The key here is to research the numerous services scrupulously before parting with your cash to be sure you get exactly what you want.
